List of Funds

A community foundation is a collection of many separate funds established by individuals, families, nonprofit organizations, and companies to enhance the quality of life in a local area. Community Foundation funds accommodate a variety of philanthropic interests and giving styles.

The funds listed below reflect the diverse charitable interests of our area's donors. All funds are divided into one of seven types: Unrestricted Funds, Field of Interest Funds, Donor Advised Funds, Designated Funds, Scholarship Funds, Temporary Funds, and Affiliated Trust Funds.

Unrestricted Funds
These funds give the Community Foundation both the resources and the flexibility to address the ever changing needs facing the people and institutions of our region.

Field of Interest Funds
Donors who establish a Field of Interest Fund may rely on the expertise of the Community Foundation to determine the most effective use of their fund to address an area of interest to the donor, such as the arts, the environment, or human services.

A Temporary fund provides the option for donors to make annual gifts from which the entire principal is granted for a particular purpose.

Frank G. DeMaio Fund will enable three schools in Cook County to provide instruction of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL). 2007 Designated

Esperanza Fund allows the donor to participate actively in the grant making process while answering the needs of the community. 2007 Donor Advised.

The Manley and Lillian Goldfine Gold Star Temporary Fund will support the operations related to the Manley and Lillian Goldfine Gold Star Teacher Award Fund. 2007 Temporary

G.R.A.C.E. Fund, part of the Apostle Islands family of funds, addresses changing needs of the region served by the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund. 2007 Field of Interest

Patricia S. Gustafson ‘56 Memorial Scholarship Fund will award a renewable scholarship to a graduating female senior from Denfeld High School or Marshall School who exemplifies the life of Patricia Gustafson. 2007 Scholarship

Todd, Susan, Matthew and Hilary Johnson 2007 Charitable Fund addresses the region’s changing needs. 2007 Unrestricted Family

Knight Creative Communities Initiative Fund helps support the activities of the KCCI project in the Duluth-Superior area. 2007 Designated

Gregory S. and Barbara J. Miller Charitable Lead Trust supports land and water conservation by the West Wisconsin Land Trust in the St. Croix and Lake Superior watersheds. 2007 Temporary

Minnesota Power New Generation Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to full-time college students who reside in Minnesota Power’s service area and major in a qualifying field of study. 2007 Temporary

Nordling Family Designated Fund I supports two nonprofit organizations in Duluth. 2007 Designated

Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance for students with potential from the three public high schools in Duluth. 2007 Scholarship

Young Leaders Fund recognizes young adults and their efforts to assist in making the Duluth-Superior community an exciting place to live. 2007 Unrestricted

John T. and Elizabeth C. Adams Arts Fund is designed to attract programs of artistic quality to the Duluth Superior area and enrich performances, exhibits and artistic services for area organizations. 1984 Field of Interest

Anderson Niskanen Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for graduating seniors from Duluth public high schools who are in financial need for post-secondary education at the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. 1998 Scholarship

Scott D. Anderson Leadership Foundation Fund is dedicated to sponsoring the delivery of high quality, value-based leadership training opportunities and/or scholarships recognizing leadership accomplishments for youth. 1999 Field of Interest

Anishinabe Fund fosters cultural awareness of Ojibwe traditions, encourages the migration of ideas from, and encourages respect for, the Ojibwe culture. 1999 Donor Advised

Anonymous Charitable Fund, of the Cook County Community Fund, a donor advised fund of the Merrill Lynch Community Charitable Fund, will allow the donor to participate actively in the grantmaking process. 2004 Donor Advised

Anonymous Family Fund will support 5 nonprofit organizations designated by the donor. 2006 Designated

Anonymous Friend Designated Fund supports nonprofit organizations designed by the donor. 2005 Designated

Anonymous Friend Fund addresses the region's changing needs. 2005 Unrestricted

Anonymous I Charitable Fund supports two nonprofit organizations in the Duluth area. 1994 Designated

Anonymous III Fund addresses changing needs in the Two Harbors area together with support of a nonprofit program in the area. 2005 Designated

Anonymous IV Fund will provide support to a nonprofit organization n Cook County. 2005 Designated

Anonymous Temporary Fund provided the opportunity for a donor to make an anonymous grant to a nonprofit organization. 2005 Designated

Paul Antonich Scholarship Fund honors Paul's spirit by providing a scholarship to a Duluth Central High School senior boy on the track and/or cross-country team. The recipient is a student who encourages others, demonstrates dedication, good citizenship, and promotes team unity. The candidates must also show respect and dignity towards others as Paul did. 2000 Scholarship

Apostle Islands Area Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, actively promotes private giving for the public good of the Apostle Islands area. 2000 Field of Interest

Apostle Islands Area Community Operating Fund supports the activities of the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund. 2000 Temporary

Apostle Islands Area Grant Making Fund will support projects in the arts, environment, human rights, adult education, community, youth and family services, and civic areas in the the Bayfield-LaPointe-Red Cliff region. 2004 Temporary

Apostle Islands Area Program Services Endowment Fund provides direct support for the operating costs of the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund. 2002 Designated

Apostle Islands Charitable Temporary Fund supports the activities of the Friends of the Bayfield Recreation Center. 2006 Temporary Donor Advised

Apter Family Fund was created to allow the donor to participate actively in the grant making process. 1998 Donor Advised

Darrell and Palchie Asselin Scholarship Fund was created as a memorial to provide financial assistance to the non-traditional student in financial need. 1993 Scholarship

Samuel F. Atkins and Barbara H. Atkins Memorial Fund helps low-income, disadvantaged people meet their basic human needs and encourages and enables projects which involve animals, attend to the welfare of animals, or alleviate animal suffering. 1992 Field of Interest

Attracting and Maintaining Young People Fund supports the efforts of the Attracting and Maintaining Young People Initiative of the DSACF. 2006 Temporary

Barnum Fund supports nonprofit organizations serving the residents of the Duluth Superior area. 1993 Unrestricted

William E. Barto Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to high school seniors of Duluth and Superior who plan to major in the arts and attend the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Wisconsin-Superior. 1995 Scholarship

Bayfield Community Education Foundation Fund supports the agency's mission to facilitate achievement of educational excellence by students attending schools located within the Bayfield School District. 2001 Organizational Endowment

Bayfield Heritage Association Fund supports the agency's mission to promote awareness, appreciation, and preservation of Bayfield's distinctive history. 2001 Organizational Endowment

Birch Grove Foundation Fund will support efforts to sustain community-based elementary education. 2005 Organizational Endowment

Dr. and Mrs. Bernhard Boecker Charitable Fund addresses the region's changing needs. 1996 Unrestricted

Bernard B. Brusin and Mary L. Brusin Scholarship Fund established as a memorial, provides renewable scholarships to Jewish and Roman Catholic students for college or vocational training. 1987 Scholarship

Building for Women Fund supports the charitable purposes of the Building for Women, located in Duluth, Minnesota. 2000 Organizational Endowment

William, Florence and Dorothy Burns Family Fund addresses the region's changing needs. 1996 Unrestricted Family

Business Leaders Fund benefits both our area's business leaders and the charitable community. With a minimum gift of $25,000, the Fund enables business leaders to expand their grant making capacity, enjoy increased community visibility, and receive ongoing credit for their generosity. Members of the Business Leaders Fund as of December 31, 2006, are: CLM Corporation; Duluth News Tribune; Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific Railway; Enbridge Energy Partners; Evening Telegram Company/Morgan Murphy Stations; Hanft Fride, A Professional Association; M&I Bank (in memory of Robert D. Allen Butler Minority Law Enforcement Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to people of color to begin or continue law enforcement training at a post-secondary institution. 1996 Temporary

Campbell Family Charitable Fund was created in 1950 by John C. Campbell, Jr., a veteran timber producer. The Fund was subsequently transferred to the Community Foundation. 1984 Unrestricted

Carlton County Historical Society Foundation Fund was established to support the Carlton County Historical Society in its efforts to collect, preserve, and disseminate the history of Carlton County. 1999 Organizational Endowment

Michael Adam Carroll Memorial Fund will provide financial resources to organizations that provide services to disabled youth and their families, particularly in the areas of family support services and respite care. 2005 Donor Advised

Center on Alcohol and Drug Problems Fund was created to support, in perpetuity, the Center on Alcohol and Drug Problems. 1987 Organizational Endowment

Central Mesabi Fund for Human Services assists agencies that directly help low-income people cope with their basic needs and problems. Grants are restricted to agencies that serve communities bounded on the west by Coleraine and on the east by Mountain Iron. 1989 Field of Interest

Cleveland Family Fund addresses the region's changing needs. 2003 Unrestricted

Cloquet Educational Foundation Fund, established to realize the advantages of broader investment management, is dedicated to the youth of the Cloquet community. 1994 Organizational Endowment

Community Leaders Fund recognizes businesses and individuals that have provided outstanding resources to address our region's charitable needs, now and in the future. With a minimum gift of $10,000, the Fund offers community leaders an opportunity to expand the impact of their charitable giving and enjoy increased and ongoing visibility for their generosity. Members of the Community Leaders Fund as of December 31, 2006, are: Martha B. Alworth; Abbot G. Apter, Barker's Island Marina; Richard R. The Community Opportunity Fund, formerly known as the Unrestricted Endowment is created by the gifts of many generous donors wishing to benefit the community as a whole. People from all walks of life have pooled contributions into this Fund, creating a permanent legacy for our community. 1983 Unrestricted

Cook County Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation, actively promotes private giving for the public good of the Cook County area. 2003 Field of Interest

Cook County Community Grantmaking Fund will support projects in the Cook County area. 2005 Temporary

Cook County Community Operating Fund supports the activities of the Cook County Community Fund. 2004 Temporary

Cook County Higher Education Fund was established to support higher education resources for the residents of Cook County. 2006 Organizational Endowment

Donor Advised Temporary Fund provided the donor of the Community Foundation's $10,000 gift to provide a $10,000 grant to a qualifying nonprofit of their choice. 2005 Donor Advised

Douglas County Disaster and Welfare Fund was created in 1919 by the Superior Chapter of the Red Cross and residual gifts to the Superior Fire Relief Committee and later transferred to the Community Foundation. Income from this Fund continues to help the general welfare of Douglas County residents. 1984 Field of Interest

Duluth Building & Construction Trades Council Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to children of members of unions affiliated with the Duluth Building Trades Council. 2006 Temporary

Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to graduating seniors of Central High School. The student must demonstrate qualities of fine character, consideration for others, perseverance, and desire to succeed. Originally established as the George A. Beck Scholarship Fund by the Class of 1994 of Duluth Central High School. 1999 Scholarship

Duluth Playhouse Endowment Fund supports the continued operations of the Duluth Playhouse. 1996 Organizational Endowment

Duluth Public Schools Fund was established to gain greater visibility and support for Duluth Public Schools by supporting innovative and creative educational projects. 1984 Organizational Endowment

Duluth Superior Sharing Fund enables human service agencies to provide small cash grants to vendors on behalf of low-income clients at times of critical need. 1983 Temporary

Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund will provide support to the City of Duluth for public projects. 2005 Organizational Endowment

Julie Enberg Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to female undergraduate athletes at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Fund was established to honor Julie's dedication to sports, especially hockey, and her commitment to both her community and the University of Minnesota Duluth. 2001 Scholarship

Erola Family Fund, a donor advised fund of the Merrill Lynch Community Charitable Fund, will allow the donor to participate actively in the grant making process. 2005 Donor Advised

Fair Chance Fund encourages and enables innovative and collaborative projects which reduce long-term dependency on public assistance programs, decrease the effects of poverty on children, and provide opportunities for economic self-sufficiency. 1991 Field of Interest

Family Service Sharing Fund was created with the remaining assets of Family Service of Duluth. 1989 Unrestricted

Four Cedars Environmental Fund was established to provide financial incentives that initiate, stimulate, enrich, and assist programs and organizations involved in the protection, preservation, and education of the unique natural resources found primarily within the Western Lake Superior Watershed. 2006 Field of Interest

C.E. Fuller, Jr. and M.K. Fuller Fund, created in 1963 and later transferred to the Community Foundation, supports human service programs in the region. 1997 Field of Interest

Fund for the Environment reflects growing community concern and awareness of our interdependency with our environment. 1991 Field of Interest

Peter M. Gargano Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to the children of the employees of Ulland Brothers for post-secondary education. 1992 Temporary

Gernander Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to graduating seniors of Denfeld High School with demonstrated good character who combine athletic and academic accomplishments. 1998 Scholarship

Girl Scouts - Northern Pine Council Endowment ensures funds for the future of Girl Scouting 1986 Organizational Endowment

Global Awareness Fund assists projects that increase community awareness of our global interdependence and promote citizen participation in global issues. 1983 Donor Advised

Colonel Lawrence H. Golberg Aviation Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Colonel Golberg, a Vietnam pilot who died in battle, by providing scholarships for post-secondary pilot training in the Duluth area. 2003 Scholarship

Manley and Lillian Goldfine Star Teacher Award will recognize and reward outstanding educators of ISD#709 - Duluth Public Schools. 2006 Field of Interest

Goodwill Future Fund was created to realize the advantages of broader investment management and gain greater visibility for Goodwill Industries. 1995 Organizational Endowment

Grand Marais Public Library Fund will support the continued operations of the Grand Marais Public Library. 2006 Designated

Greater Proctor Area Scholarship Foundation provides greater visibility and support for the foundation and its many scholarships. 2004 Organizational Endowment

Grutzner Madeline Island Fund will support nonprofit organizations serving Madeline Island and its residents. 2006 Field of Interest

Arthur and Winnie Gurovitsch Children's Fund was created to honor Arthur Gurovitsch's kindness to and loving ways with children. This Fund will light the way for less fortunate children. 1997 Field of Interest

Harris Family Fund will provide support to 9 nonprofit organizations which have been designated by the donors. 2006 Designated

Carol and Peter Harris Family Fund was created to allow the donors to participate actively in the grant making process. 2005 Donor Advised

Scott Hawkins Fund was created to allow the donor to participate actively in the grant making process. 2006 Donor Advised

Jeanne H. Hemmingway Scholarship Fund was founded as a memorial to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors attending the University of Minnesota Duluth. 1990 Scholarship

Hermantown Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, actively promotes private giving for the public good in the Hermantown area. 2005 Filed of Interest

Hermantown Community Grantmaking Fund will support projects in the Hermantown community. 2006 Temporary

Hermantown Community Operating Fund supports the activities of the Hermantown Community Fund. 2005 Temporary

Gus and Henrietta Hill Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to Duluth East High School graduates. The Fund was created through a bequest from Henrietta Hill in memory of her grandson, Roger C. Hill, Jr. 2000 Scholarship

John Hoffbauer Memorial Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for graduating high school seniors from Duluth or Proctor public schools who plan to major in education or early childhood education. 2000 Temporary

Max and Julia Houghton Duluth Central Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to graduating Central seniors for post-secondary education. 2003 Temporary

Human Rights Fund supports projects that promote tolerance and combat bigotry, racism, and discrimination in the Apostle Islands area. 2000 Field of Interest

Human Rights Grantmaking Fund will support human rights projects in the Bayfield-LaPointe-Red Cliff area.

Howard J. and Barb Ignatius Fund will provide funding equally to support technology at Denfeld High School and the English Department at Proctor Senior High School. 2006 Designated
