Scholarship Recipients

 
Current Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation scholarship recipients network during the 2008 Scholarship Reunion Party. The picnic, held at the Park Point Beachhouse, was held to celebrate the Community Foundation's 25th Anniversary and to launch the Foundation's newest scholarship Pay It Forward.

2010 Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation Scholarship Recipients:

• The Anderson-Niskanen Scholarship, given to graduating seniors of Duluth Public Schools who will attend UMD or UM-Twin Cities, was awarded to Michelle Hobbs of Denfeld High School.
• The Paul Antonich Scholarship, established to honor the memory of Central High School student Paul Antonich, was awarded to Derek Toms.
• The Darrell and Palchie Asselin Scholarship, awarded to non-traditional students entering their junior or senior year of college, was awarded to College of St. Scholastica students Korey LeBrasseur and Natalya Nektalov.
• The William E. Barto Scholarship provides scholarships to high school seniors of Duluth and Superior who attend the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Wisconsin-Superior and major in the arts. This year’s recipients are Denfeld graduate Maren Keinitz, East graduate Courtney Ellian, and Superior graduate Logan Amys.
• The Bernard B. and Mary L. Brusin Scholarship, which was established as a memorial and provides renewable scholarships to Jewish and Roman Catholic students for college or vocational training, was awarded to Central High School graduate Alexandra Sweeney.
• The Duluth Building and Construction Trades Council Scholarship, awarded to children whose parents are members of one of the unions affiliated with the Duluth Building Trades Council, was awarded to Denfeld graduate Emily Stolan and Greenway graduate Annalee Swedeen.
• The Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to graduating seniors of Central High School to help them achieve their educational goals, was awarded to Kyle Johannessen.
• The Julie Enberg Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to female undergraduate athletes at the University of Minnesota Duluth in honor of former student and coach Julie Enberg, was awarded to Gina Dodge.
• The Peter M. Gargano Scholarship, funded by Ulland Brothers Inc. for children of their employees, was awarded to Shelby Vietze.
• The recipient of the 2010 Gernander Scholarship, which honors Denfeld graduates who have demonstrated both athletic and academic excellence, is Madison Pertler.
• Amber Ostberg is the 2010 recipient of the Patricia S. Gustafson ’56 Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating female from Denfeld or Marshall who exemplifies the life of Patricia Gustafson.
• Three Jeanne H. Hemmingway Scholarships, for residents of Cook, Lake or St. Louis counties, have been awarded to Michelle Marnich and Amber Ostberg of Denfeld and Kelsea Pearson of Hermantown.
• The Gus and Henrietta Hill Scholarship, which provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to East High School graduates, went to Sarah Bard.
• Scholarships in memory of Greg Irons, who devoted his professional life to teaching and helping others, were awarded to Denfeld High School graudate Kayla Ford and East High School graduate Buma Foscham.
• The Greg Irons Teacher Award, which honors outstanding employees of ISD 709 who uphold the tenets of Greg Irons, was presented to Sebastian Tackling, an instructor at Denfeld High School.
• Residents of the Hermantown School District and graduates of Hermantown High School are eligible to apply for the Jackson Club scholarship. This year there were nine winners. They are:

• The Cory Jam Memorial Award is given to an East High School senior on the basis of academics and community involvement. The 2010 winner is Amelia Black.
• The Lake Superior Medical Society Tilderquist Scholarship is given to students entering their second year at the UMD Medical School. The 2010 winner is Kristen Scislow.
• The Modern Woodmen of America Scholarship Fund, which was established by the Duluth Camp No. 2341 Modern Woodmen of America to provide assistance to a non-traditional student in financial need, was awarded to St. Scholastica student Cassaundra Wirth.
• The Minnesota Power New Generation Scholarship rewards the academic excellence of local college and university students who are entering specific fields of study.

• A second Minnesota Power Award, the Community Involvement Scholarship, recognizes the contributions that high school students make in their communities. The twenty winners of that award for 2010 are:

• The Hubert A. Nelson Scholarship, a renewable scholarship given to business/accounting students who will attend either UMD or UWS, was awarded to Denfeld graduate Kelly Green and Superior graduate Trent Van Damme.
• The Amelia and Emanuel Nessell Family Scholarship, honoring the memory of Amelia and Emanuel Nessell, was awarded to Joshua Serre of Marshall.
• The Dr. Mark Rathke Family Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior from the Marshall School, went to Rebecca Dugdale.
• The Steve Rolland Youth Peacemaker Award Fund, which honors youth who undertake community peacemaking activities in the Duluth area, was awarded to Jeremiah Strong.
• The Jack and Mary Rowe Memorial Scholarship, which goes to public high school students in Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor who will pursue a career in engineering, was awarded to Hermantown High School senior Stephanie Thun.
• The Lawrence E. and Mabel Jackson Rudberg Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to graduating seniors from Two Harbors High School and Duluth public and private high schools, was awarded to Two Harbors graduate Sonja Peterson.
• The Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship, awarded to a ‘late bloomer’ in the Duluth school system, was awarded to Kyle Levanen.
• The Phil Shykes Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Hermantown High School who demonstrates involvement in community service and academic excellence. The 2010 recipient is Chad Mozol.
• The Superior East High All-Class Reunion Scholarship, given to a descendant of a graduate of Superior East High School, was awarded to Amber Nelson.
• The Ulland Brothers Inc. Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to the children of Ulland Brothers Inc. employees, was awarded to Jenna Sager of Albert Lee.
• The Charlotte Ulland Scholarship for Girls, which provides financial assistance for females graduating from public high schools on Lake Superior's North Shore, was awarded for the first time to Two Harbors seniors Josie Strom and Catherine Wells.
• The Robert B. & Sophia Whiteside Scholarships, given on the basis of academic excellence, have been awarded to the following twenty five Duluth high school students for the 2010 academic year:
