The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation continues its work of promoting civility. With financial assistance from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Bridging Differences through Civil Discourse project focuses on promoting civil and open discussion of economic development projects in Duluth and Superior.
A nine-member task force of persons with differing perspectives on economic development worked collectively to create eight recommendations for ways to make economic less contentious in the Duluth/Superior region. Programs and practices from communities throughout the United States were reviewed and ideas were generated from discussions with community leaders. When implemented, the recommendations should help developers, interested citizens, neighbors and public officials communicate effectively about the difficult, complex and sometimes contentious issues involved with development projects.
Status: We are in the process of moving this project from the "planning phase" to the "implementation phase" to move the recommendations from ideas on paper into reality.
Highlights: Meetings with potential implementers is underway (January 2007).
Task Force Members: Bob Browne, Bob Bruce, John Lawien (Chair), Don Ness, Alan Netland, Andrew Lisak, Nancy Norr, Jason Serck and Carolyn Sundquist.
